Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

Some may think that entering data day in and day out is so glamorous. Sure I get to basically make my own hours, wear jeans and a sweatshirt every day (I hail from 13 years of wearing the same color uniform so it’s in my nature), and listen to my ghetto mp3 player or recently discovered pandora on my sweet phone. But there are some downsides to this life of leisure. For instance, as I experienced this week, if theres no work to do they just call you out thats it you cant come in. Also since I love sleep I work the ‘night shift’ and the night shifters basically get screwed if someone is out or if theres a holiday they just tell them to leave early which isn’t ideal with loan payments looming.
Oh, silly me I forgot to tell you exactly what kind of data I’m entering. Well basically you know those ads you get in newspapers like for CVS or something. We take PDF versions of those weekly ads and input them into a computer program so that if you go to their website and want to look at deals all the information is the same. So it’s nice to see all the upcoming deals but most of the companies I input only exist in Canada and I don’t even have a passport so it’s not much help to me.
I know this won’t be my job forever, or at least I hope not. I hope I didn’t go 4 years and insane loan debt to enter data for almost 7 hours a day. I mean I went to a good school, even managed to graduate Summa Cum Laude so there must be something better for me right? I can’t help but sing Avenue Q everytime I think about my Communication degree which is currently sitting in a box back in Boston. I scower the online job sites almost every day constantly applying to random office jobs just to get more experience under my belt and hopefully a pay raise. My dream is not to work in a cubicle which I guess I’m doing a good job of avoiding at this current data entry place but I would also love to see something other than my two computer screens.
Chicago does provide more opportunities for jobs in my ‘field’ of work, which would be media production. What kind of production? Well I’m not too sure myself, just the experience of being on a film or television set would be enough for me and I’ll figure this out later. I’ve worked as a Production Assistant following a camera and getting random strangers to sign pieces of paper while trying not to crush their dreams of being a tv star. Also I had an awesome internship at a local news station where I met ltons of people and learned new skills but unfortunately they weren’t hiring which was a shame.
Its hard not to get discouraged when places don’t call you back or they don’t have jobs available where I could be useful. I just have to remember to be patient and things will work out. I mean I’m young! I’m just 22 days shy of 23, I did well in school, I have multiple interests, I’m quiet sure but if I’m passionate about something I come alive and believe me television and films are something I’m passionate about. Not to toot my own horn but I think I’m pretty funny, witty almost, and I would be a great worker. People should be falling over themselves for me to work for them. Now I just have to tell myself that everyday before I go off to input data and I think I’ll be fine.
Now all that being said if anyone has any tips for finding job openings I would love them! Like I said I frequent various entertainment job sites, monster, craigslist, careerbuilder but anthing else would be nice. Award season is starting soon and every year that gets my blood boiling that one day I will be at one of those award shows somehow, someway. I just gotta relax because I have plenty of time and I should enjoy it now.
